Calling all adventurous eaters!
Miranti of The Joy of Feasting is teaming up with Musician chef Elenna Canlas (Pinay Tambay, Sinkane) to host Island Hop, a summer pop-up series for adventurous eaters at Bushwick’s Mad Tropical. July’s installment is dedicated to Anthony Bourdain, who shared their love and appreciation for Indonesian and Filipino cuisine, and promoted “ethnic foods” beyond Western stereotypes.
Embodying Bourdain’s thought that, “Our weird is the World’s delicious,” Canlas (of Pinay heritage) and Miranti (an Indonesian native) aim to expand palates and move the culinary conversation forward by featuring authentic Indonesian and Filipino cuisine that diners in the West probably haven’t had a chance to experience.
The duo will pay tribute with a special menu that features a tasting platter called the “perfect pig”, which includes the famous (and Bourdain approved!) Filipino dish, Sisig, and beloved Indonesian poultries like soft-bone roasted quail, pope’s nose satay, and chicken hearts stewed in coconut chili lemongrass broth, playfully referred to as “Unknown Parts”. A standout dish that is returning from the first Island Hop is a dessert collaboration called Las Dos Cuchifritas, featuring Filipino lumpia turon (banana stuffed lumpia) served with ube ice cream alongside Indonesian fermented cassava beignets with blackberry jam. There will be vegan and vegetarian options throughout the menu from appetizers to dessert comprising of unique vegetable dish such as torch-ginger flower coconut salad and the crowd favorite, Indonesian cassava and tempe based "vegan crab cake", as well as artisan popsicles inspired by Indonesian dessert drinks. This event is family friendly.
A signature cocktail menu will be designed by Mad Tropical to accompany the meal, and DJ Rara will be on deck bumping the good vibes all evening.
